1. Introduzione
The Mastech MS6812 Cable Tracker is a professional and safe tool designed for identifying and tracing wires or cables within a bundle without causing damage to their insulation. It is particularly useful for telephone lines, allowing users to identify various states of the line, which simplifies installation, debugging, and maintenance tasks.
Key features of the MS6812 include:
- Detects continuity of cables or wires without damaging insulation.
- Traces cables or wires and diagnoses break points.
- Receives tone signals on cables or wires (e.g., telephone lines).
- Identifies the state of a working telephone line (clear ring, busy).

Figure 1: Mastech MS6812 Cable Tracker (Receiver and Sender Units)
The image displays the Mastech MS6812 Cable Tracker, consisting of two main components: the receiver unit (left) and the sender unit (right). The receiver is a green, pen-shaped device with a black tip, a blue button, and a speaker grille at the bottom. The sender unit is a rectangular green box with 'CONT' and 'TONE' indicators, and attached cables including an RJ11 connector and alligator clips (red and black).
2. Impostazione
2.1. Installazione della batteria
Both the receiver and emitter units require a 9V (6F22) battery for operation. To install the battery:
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of both the receiver and emitter units.
- Per aprire il vano, far scorrere o sganciare il coperchio.
- Collegare una batteria da 9 V al morsetto della batteria, assicurandosi della corretta polarità.
- Inserire la batteria nel vano e chiudere bene il coperchio.
Note: Ensure the battery is inserted correctly to avoid damage to the device.
2.2. Connecting to Cables
The sender unit comes with various connectors for different applications:
- Connettore RJ11: For direct connection to standard telephone jacks.
- Morsetti a coccodrillo: For connecting to individual wires, bare conductors, or terminals.
Choose the appropriate connector based on the cable or line you intend to test.
3. Istruzioni per l'uso
3.1. Cable Tracing Function
This function allows you to trace the path of a cable and locate its ends within a bundle.
- Connect the sender unit to the cable you wish to trace using either the RJ11 connector or the alligator clips.
- Turn on the sender unit. The 'TONE' indicator light should illuminate, indicating it is emitting a tone signal.
- Accendere l'unità ricevente.
- Move the tip of the receiver along the suspected cable path. The receiver will emit an audible tone when it detects the signal from the sender. The tone will be loudest when the receiver is directly over the correct cable.
- Follow the tone to trace the cable's route or identify its specific location.
3.2. Test di continuità
Use this function to check for breaks or short circuits in a cable.
- Connect the sender unit to one end of the cable using the alligator clips.
- Connect the other end of the cable to the other alligator clip of the sender unit (for a loop test) or to a known good ground/return path.
- Observe the 'CONT' indicator on the sender unit. If the cable has continuity, the 'CONT' light will illuminate. If there is a break, it will remain off.
3.3. Telephone Line State Identification
The MS6812 can identify the state of an active telephone line.
- Connect the RJ11 connector of the sender unit directly into the telephone line jack.
- Observe the indicator lights on the sender unit:
- If the line is idle (clear ring), a specific light pattern or tone might be indicated (refer to sender unit markings for exact indication).
- If the line is busy, a different light pattern or tone will be indicated.
Note: Always ensure the device is turned off when not in use to conserve battery life.
4. Manutenzione
4.1. Pulizia
Per mantenere le prestazioni e l'aspetto del dispositivo:
- Wipe the exterior of the units with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or strong chemicals, as these may damage the plastic casing.
4.2. Sostituzione della batteria
When the indicator lights dim or the tone signal weakens, it's time to replace the 9V battery in both units. Follow the battery installation steps outlined in Section 2.1.
4.3. Conservazione
If the device will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage to the circuitry. Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
